Standard 2-way ball valves control flow in a single pipeline — open or closed. But many process applications require flow to be diverted, mixed, split, or bypassed. Installing two separate 2-way valves to achieve this adds cost, space, and potential leak points. 3-way and 4-way multi-port ball valves achieve the same result in a single compact valve body.
1. What Is a 3-Way Ball Valve?
A 3-way ball valve has three ports (connections) and a bored ball with either an L-shaped or T-shaped flow path. By rotating the ball 90°, different combinations of ports are connected or blocked — enabling diverting, mixing, or splitting service without multiple valves.
2. L-Port vs T-Port: The Critical Difference
L-Port Ball (Diverting Valve)
The L-shaped bore connects two adjacent ports at a time. Rotating 90° switches which two ports are connected. L-port valves are used for flow diverting — routing flow from one inlet to one of two alternative outlets (never connecting all three simultaneously).
- 0° position: Port A ↔ Port B (Port C isolated)
- 90° position: Port B ↔ Port C (Port A isolated)
- Typical use: Routing feed between two alternative tanks or processes
T-Port Ball (Mixing or Splitting Valve)
The T-shaped bore can connect all three ports simultaneously or two adjacent ports. Rotating 90° changes the flow pattern. T-port valves enable mixing (two inlets to one outlet) or splitting (one inlet to two outlets).
- 0° position: All three ports connected (straight through + side branch)
- 90° position: Two adjacent ports connected (third isolated)
- Typical use: Blending two fluid streams, splitting to two parallel circuits
3. 4-Way Ball Valves
A 4-way ball valve has four ports and is used for more complex flow routing — typically in hydraulic and pneumatic actuator supply/return circuits, or where two separate flow paths must be reversed simultaneously. The ball bore creates an X or L-shaped path connecting specific pairs of ports at each position.
