1. What is API 6D?
API 6D is the American Petroleum Institute's standard for Pipeline and Piping Valves. It specifies design, material, dimensional, testing, and marking requirements for ball valves, plug valves, gate valves, and check valves intended for use in pipeline transmission systems — covering oil, gas, and liquid service.
API 6D is technically equivalent to ISO 14313 and is the mandatory standard referenced in most oil & gas pipeline project specifications globally (including India's OISD, PNGRB regulations, and international FEED/EPC specifications).
2. What is the API Monogram Program?
The API Monogram Program is a third-party licensing scheme that authorizes valve manufacturers to stamp the API monogram on products that have been designed, manufactured, inspected, and tested in full compliance with the relevant API standard.
Key characteristics of the program:
- Administered by the American Petroleum Institute
- Requires a third-party facility audit by an API-authorized auditor
- License must be renewed every 3 years via re-audit
- Covers the manufacturer's complete quality management system (QMS), production processes, material control, and testing capabilities
- A licensed manufacturer receives a unique License Number that must appear on all monogrammed products
3. What Does an API 6D Audit Cover?
To obtain and maintain the API 6D monogram license, a manufacturer must pass an independent audit covering all of the following areas:
Quality Management System
The manufacturer must have a documented QMS covering all stages from design to delivery, with defined procedures for non-conformances, corrective actions, and continuous improvement.
Material Control
All raw materials — bar stock, castings, forgings, trim materials — must be traceable from the mill certificate to the finished product. Material substitution is strictly controlled.
Manufacturing & Machining Processes
The facility must demonstrate adequate manufacturing capabilities — CNC machining, heat treatment (if applicable), surface treatment, assembly, and cleanliness requirements per API 6D.
Testing Capabilities
The manufacturer must have in-house hydrostatic and pneumatic testing equipment capable of performing shell tests, seat tests, and backseat tests per API 6D test pressure requirements — and maintain calibration records for all test equipment.
Documentation & Traceability
Every API 6D-monogrammed valve must be accompanied by a Manufacturer's Data Report (MDR) with full material, dimensional inspection, and test records traceable to the valve serial number.
4. What Does the API 6D Mark on a Valve Tell You?
When you see the API 6D monogram stamp on a valve, it tells you that:
- The valve was designed in accordance with API 6D dimensional and pressure-temperature requirements
- Materials were procured with mill test certificates and are traceable
- The valve was hydrostatically tested to API 6D shell and seat test pressure requirements
- The manufacturer's quality system was independently audited and approved by API
- The manufacturer is accountable — their license number is on the product
