Valve Hydrostatic Test Pressure Chart

API 598, API 6D & ASME B16.34 reference pressure tables.

The following hydrostatic test pressure charts are used for valve testing as per API 598, API 6D, and ASME B16.34 standards. All Novel Valves products are tested to these requirements before dispatch.

API 598 — Valve Inspection and Testing

API 598 covers inspection, supplementary examination, and pressure test requirements for both resilient-seated and metal-seated valves.

Pressure Class Shell Test (bar g) Seat Test (bar g) Closure Test (bar g)
Class 15031.022.822.8
Class 30077.056.556.5
Class 600154.0113.1113.1
Class 900231.0169.7169.7
Class 1500385.0282.8282.8
Class 2500641.0470.7470.7

Values at 38°C (100°F) for carbon steel material per API 598. Shell test = 1.5× rated pressure. Seat/closure test = 1.1× rated pressure.

API 6D — Pipeline Valves Test Pressures

API 6D specifies test requirements for pipeline ball valves, gate valves, check valves and plug valves used in the petroleum and natural gas industry.

Pressure Class Shell Test (bar g) Seat Test (bar g)
Class 15030.020.7
Class 30077.551.7
Class 600155.0103.4
Class 900232.5155.0
Class 1500387.5258.6
Class 2500645.8431.3

Frequently Asked Questions

What is API 598 hydrostatic test pressure?

API 598 specifies the shell test at 1.5× the pressure rating at 38°C, seat test at 1.1× the pressure rating. Test duration varies by valve size — typically 15 seconds to 60 seconds.

What is the difference between shell test and seat test?

A shell test (body test) verifies the integrity of the valve body and bonnet under pressure. A seat test checks the sealing ability of the valve seats. Both are required per API 598 and API 6D.

What pressure class is required for oil and gas valves?

Oil and gas pipeline valves typically use ASME Class 600, 900, 1500 or 2500 depending on the operating pressure and temperature. API 6D certified valves by Novel Valves are available from Class 150 to Class 2500.
